Tea Culture

Tea culture stands for friendship, community, quality time and sharing.

Tea is something to be shared, and the Asian way of drinking tea allows for small tea circles to be formed around a table with friends or colleagues.

Tea Dao promotes tea drinking culture, based on traditional Asian concepts, that have been customised for todays Australian way of life.

"The very act of preparing and serving tea encourages conversation. The little spaces in time created by teatime rituals call out to be filled with conversation. Even the tea itself, warm and comforting, inspires a feeling of relaxation and trust that fosters shared confidences"

-Emilie Barnes

Inner Cultivation

For millennia, tea has been used as a tool for meditative, inner cultivation practices, known in China and Japan as the TeaDao or ChaDao tradition.

We aim to make this ancient wisdom and knowledge accessible to everyone.

These teachings can be incorporated into how we live so that the benefits of TeaDao can be experienced on a daily basis.

"If man has no tea in him,
he is incapable of
understanding the truth and beauty"

Japanese Proverb
"If you are cold,
tea will warm you;
If you too are heated, it will cool you;
If you are depressed,
it will cheer you;
If you are excited,
it will calm you"

William Ewart Gladstone
"There is something in the nature of tea that leads us into a world of quiet contemplation of life"

Lin Yutang
“Who would then deny that when I am sipping
tea in my tearoom I am swallowing the whole universe with it and that this very moment of my lifting the bowl to my lips is eternity itself transcending time and space?”

Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki
"When tea becomes ritual, it takes its place at the heart of our ability to see greatness in small things"

Muriel Barbery

What is tea?

All classic teas (white, green, yellow, oolong, black, red and pu'er) originate from the same plant: Camellia sinensis, which is the focus of Tea Dao.

The many hundreds of tea varieties are created from a combination of different types of terrain, climate, latitude, altitude, processing methods, seasonality, parts of the tree (tips vs inner bush) and many other fascinating factors.

What is Dao?

Dao is a Chinese word, literally meaning a way, path, concept or a method. The character of Dao 道 depicts a person on a life journey, empowering the traveler with a conscious choice of direction. Within the TeaDao context, Dao refers to the culture of appreciating and sharing good tea and being conscious about what we consume and where it comes from.
